ORICO RH4CS USB3.0 HUB REVIEW

How many devices do you own that all fit into the USB port of your PC or Mac? For the most of us, being avid gadget-heads, that number varies between 3 up to 5 (some even more). Well, unless your computer came with 6 USB3.0 ports, you have to interchange devices when transferring data or just charging them up. With the ORICO RH4CS USB3.0 Hub, you don’t have to do that anymore. Imagine the convenience.

ORICO RH4CS USB3.0 HUB REVIEW

Essentially, the ORICO RH4CS is a USB3.0 hub with some specialized ports to quickly replenish the batteries of your other gadgets. In total there are 6 ports, with two exclusive power ports, while the remaining 4 extend the single USB3.0 port with which the device connects to your computer. If you already have a USB hub it’s pretty easy to brush aside the thought of buying this one, but hang on a bit, there’s a catch.

The ORICO RH4CS USB3.0 Hub concept

The makers of this device should have had problems with USB3.0 hubs themselves so they decided to better the concept of extending connection ports for more device support.

What is the biggest challenge we’ve all faced while using a USB hub? For one they’re ultra temporary and only work when plugged into the computer. Which is also their power supply (general hubs). All these issues vanish when you start using the ORICO RH4CS USB3.0 Hub.

ORICO RH4CS USB3.0 HUB REVIEW

The electrical power to charge other devices can be derived from the computer as well as from the mains. This makes it a great gadget even if you don’t have a computer close by. Separating the USB ports by color to indicate which ones are best for transferring data, and which ones are optimized for power output was a stroke of genius. One that many other makers of hubs are still to catch up with. Or better yet, realize.

Selling points

To start with, the ORICO RH4CS is the improved version of the USB hubs that are ordinary and only facilitate an extension of the direct USB3.0 port. It comes with a 100cm length of extension cable. You can enjoy the freedom of not having to be too close to a power source while you charge your devices.

If you’re not buying because you need to upgrade, then the protective aspect of it should lure you. The ORICO RH4CS protects connected devices from overcharging the batteries and even from voltage spikes.

Our ORICO RH4CS Usage Experience

Our experience with the ORICO RH4CS was initiated by us opening the packaging. Therein you’ll find essential accessories. The power pack, a detachable power cable for the mains, a manual, the warranty card, a B-Type USB3.0 connection cable of 80 cm in length. Of course, there’s the ORICO RH4CS USB3.0 Hub among the contents.

ORICO RH4CS USB3.0 HUB REVIEW

There is no way you’d miss the shiny paint finish on the ORICO RH4CS USB3.0 Hub, it is a beautiful device, to say the least. Very practical indeed. The form is crafted entirely from plastic, which makes it kind of delicate. There is nothing to worry about; very little befalls objects always stationed on a working desk with the pc as their tethered power source.

What’s inside the ORICO RH4CS

ORICO RH4CS USB3.0 HUB REVIEW

As soon as you lift the ORICO RH4CS, the lightness hints that very little is encased inside the shiny plastic. A single PCB with no moving parts does all the charging and data passing to connected devices. We had the guts to break the device apart do demonstrate this fact.

A close analysis of the circuitry reveals standard USB hub architecture, although tweaks exist to reduce overall power consumption.

ORICO RH4CS USB3.0 HUB REVIEW

All the USB slots a lined on a single edge of the circuit board, making it easy to arrange your connected devices neatly.

ORICO RH4CS USB3.0 HUB REVIEW

Like any other device, the ORICO RH4CS comes with shortcomings, albeit being able to carry out all its required functions. It is hard to be critical of such a device since interaction with it is seldom felt by the user. Rather by their devices. However, fishing from our experience using the ORICO RH4CS, a few pros and cons can be listed.

ORICO RH4CS USB3.0 HUB REVIEW

What We Liked;

  • The design is unique and blends well with the PCs already in use.
  • The quick charge ports on the bottom of the stack work as advertised. You can boost your battery in little time compared to conventional charging systems like plugging directly to the PC USB for a charge.
  • The cylindrical form alongside the neat stack of USB ports makes it easy to fit the ORICO RH4CS onto a neatly arranged workstation.
  • We loved the pricing.
  • Ultra-fast data transfer rates of up to 5Gbps make so much purchase sense.

ORICO RH4CS USB3.0 HUB REVIEW

  • The surge protection feature is very useful since we’re never really sure what the mains output effect on our gadgets is.
  • Charge-leak avoidance makes sure no power is lost from your batteries after or even during charging sessions.
  • The clean design makes a great companion for minimalistic office spaces.

ORICO RH4CS USB3.0 HUB REVIEW

  • No drivers mean you can use on any OS, we love that. You will too.
  • The base is sheathed with a protective rubber lining to reduce wear and tear.

What Needs Improvement;

  • The plastic build gives the ORICO RH4CS a fragile and short lifetime.
  • The design could have been worked on just a little more (too functional).
  • Cannot store current to charge on the go, which unless your smartphone lasts the whole day with one charge, would be a nice value-add.
  • Not compatible with Windows 10. Bummer! Still, it works with Mac and lesser Windows OS versions.

Final verdict

Most workspaces need a device that cables connecting to the various devices we own converge, to keep things clean and us sane. The functionality embedded in the ORICO RH4CS make it perhaps the best option since sometimes the need to charge a device outweighs that to transfer data between it and the PC.

Would we buy this gadget? We already did and loving the experience and much needed convenience that it comes with.
