XIAOMI TV SOUNDBAR MDZ-27-DA Review: Xiaomi’s best

Xiaomi Tv Soundbar

The Xiaomi TV Soundbar / Speaker was announced in April 2018, equipped with 8 loudspeakers promises good sound quality. The various inputs available allow excellent column versatility and use with many other devices. The audio part is often the poor relative in the TV world, and it is often too late when it is discovered. The low sound of television not only adds lousy entertainment experience but also you can not music in a better way. The only way to gain quality is to go through an external system. Xiaomi understands the scale of this need, and with its latest SOUNDBAR MDZ-27 soundbar, offers a cost-effective response to your ears.

Xiaomi Mi TV Speaker is an affordable soundbar with Bluetooth connectivity and a variety of inputs. TosLink optic, coaxial SPDIF, analog RCA, and analog with 3.5mm stereo jack. At the beginning of June 2018, it costs 105 euros from Asian retailers. But the price is subject to discounts and promotions, so I suggest you keep an eye on it for a few days before proceeding with the purchase.

Combined with a Bluetooth smartphone, the Xiaomi Mi TV Speaker (the product code is MDZ-27-DA) contributes to the diffusion of Spotify music, Apple Music, Google Music, Amazon Music. I used it to make the Nintendo Switch games immersive, to get more involved. On the other hand, it is not a product for demanding users; does not provide a remote control of the volume (read: no remote control ), does not support the apt-X protocol, and lacks several other requirements to deserve to be included in the chain of an aspiring purist (the most trivial: has no HDMI ports). The new XIAOMI MDZ-27-DA soundbar is available at Gearbest for a price of € 94.

For me, on the contrary, it is an ideal addition. I have an affordable 4K smart TV that I watch for less than an hour a day, and I spread the music inside the house at an almost intimate volume; I do not know how to take advantage of a quality sound system. The Xiaomi Mi TV Speaker allows me, in one fell swoop: to hurry up the TV stand: via the old amplifier and away the big boxes. Beautiful stuff, but to be inserted in the right context; to add another source of audio distribution, another Bluetooth speaker to which I can send music – perhaps to be plac in a room that is not yet cover.

For listen to films with a more dedicated timbre: the cinema effect or, in any case, a multi-channel system, due to the 4 + 4 loudspeakers of the soundbar, is the first difference that one feels; to increase involvement in video games.I believe many of you can look for the same improvements to their room or living room. Given the sale price, it can also be an idea for the second home, the same that we have, perhaps, enriched in winter with a Fire TV Stick, a Chromecast, a TV Now crucial.

Soundbars on the market, there is plenty. However, they are often too oriented Home Cinema and not enough music. In my case, I was looking for both a better quality for my TV without a headache but also the ability to stream music from my smartphone via Bluetooth with a quality that would be equivalent to a UE BOOM, my reference quality price.

Ordered in express here I am the first on the Internet to have the opportunity to test you the last XIAOMI MI TV SOUNDBAR.

The sales package is the same shipping: a rectangle parallelepiped the size of the frame (just a little ‘of polystyrene to hold it) with a white coaxial cable inside, screw anchors, a manual in Chinese, and the power supply from 16V 2.5A. In my sample, I did not find the adapter for the Italian plug, but you could be luckier. Just as I did not find the remote control to adjust the volume, but this is the only functional bore to accept.

You find a way around it: I have connected the XIAOMI TV SOUNDBAR to the headphone/line-out jack on my TV so that you can lower or raise the output volume from the remote and affect the soundbar. A weak solution, which loses the quality of the optical connection and SPDIF, but is a better compromise of having to get up from the sofa (or worse, from the table) to adjust the volume.

The exact reference of the Xiaomi TV / Music Bar is MDZ-27-DA. Its white color contrasts with the black generally used for these salon products. It is a usual color at Xiaomi who also claims that it does not claim the appearance of the home theater world.

Xiaomi Mi TV Speaker is of plastic; even under the first fabric there is plastic, and this is good news because it protects the speakers. However, to speak of finishes, in this case, means checking the joints of the parts, the draft of the fabric, the presence of staves, scratches or less beautiful parts of others. Alternatively, make sure that the click of the upper buttons (to change the sound source). The stability of the rubber feet (there are three: two on the sides and one in the middle). The ease of reaching the rear on / off switch as expected.

The TV bar measures 83 cm wide by 8.7 cm high and 7.2 cm thick. Its weight is reasonable, a little less than 2 kg which is explained by the use of plastic. The facade is covered with light gray fabric. The visual feeling is right. It is a clean product that goes to the basics. Three rubber pads allow you to put it on a piece of furniture without the risk of damaging it. They will also reduce vibrations.

It will also be possible to hang it on the wall under your TV in a simple way with two dowels.

The control panel is directly accessible above. There you’ll find the two round volume adjustment buttons and five more to select the source between Bluetooth / Aux-In, Line-in, S / PDIF RCA and Optical Digital. A small, discreet light above each selector indicates the active source.

The minimalist design of control is straightforward to use and operate. With the single LED notification over each source display the current source of operation.

Fortunately, everything installs correctly: the Xiaomi soundbar is a cheap product, but you only realize it when you have to touch it. Xiaomi turns it to more than 30-inch TV installations; you can mount it on the wall because it has the screw inserts on the back. Here I would have preferred the feet not applied, or interlocking and not glued; it is in good taste to remove them when you do a wall mounting, and it may remain a bit ‘of glue on the frame.

Moreover, the sound? It is adequate. Although it is difficult to give a more objective judgment, especially when talking about products on which it is not worth investing in equipment that, alone, costs three times the device. In question, I would like to reassure you about the “beautiful sound” that manages to get out. Vibrating thanks to the two 2.5-inch woofers, it is clean with the two 20 mm tweeters and does not distort when you turn up the volume too much. In contrast, the stereo effect is necessarily low if you are in front (it is 87 cm wide) and the quality of Bluetooth 4.2. Which is unmasked by the number of speakers present: I mean that if a cheap Bluetooth speaker can pump music hiding the limits of compression. There is a far more beautiful and therefore more faithful exit system. You feel better than you sound worse.

Connectivity back is consistent with the selection of sources. The Xiaomi TV bar has a 3.5 IN jack for AUX-IN, two RCA for LINE-IN, an RCA for S / PDIF and finally an optics. A switch is directly present on the bar.

Connectivity is at least expected for connection to an external source. A dedicated home theater bar would add an HDMI jack, but it is not the target of the speaker.

The point that you will not have missed is the lack of remote control. In the case of a Bluetooth connection, it will be possible to adjust the volume via the smartphone. If you connect it to your TV via the digital jack, you will need to adjust the volume directly on the bar.

The power supply is provided by a 16 V / 2.5 A external block.
Unfortunately, this block is with a Chinese plug. So you have to add a secure adapter like this from SKROSS..

 Strong and clear

I have for my first try used my smartphone and Spotify HD via Bluetooth. The match is instantaneous. Once positioned on the Bluetooth source, the Xiaomi TV bar is visible under the name MI TV sound bar and matches without worry.
Only one Bluetooth connection is possible at a time.

Clear. This is the first adjective that comes to mind when listening to music. The sound is well define with an extensive frequency range (50Hz – 25000Hz).
It was the promise of Xiaomi who equips his bar of not less than 8 HP.

The sound is balanced including low side, which is present without being exacerbated. The stereo is clearly noticeable.

The volume is compelling, and it does not saturate when it is pushed to the bottom.
I do not have a power figure to announce. I made a comparison with a UE BOOM 2which is a reference in portable speakers level quality and power. The volume of the Xiaomi bar is almost equivalent with less saturation and better definition in general than on UEBOOM 2.

The promise is holding regarding music. The soundbar Xiaomi can be used as a transportable speaker without blushing his performance.

 Low latency

I continued my tests on the other use of this Xiaomi TV bar in companion of a TV.

I first paired it in Bluetooth with my 4K Xiaomi TV BOX and then watched Youtube videos of speeches. Speeches to confirm latency performance because Bluetooth speakers often take time to decide what creates a desynchronization between image/sound.
In the case of the Xiaomi BOX with the TV bar under test, the synchronization is excellent.

The result was more mixed on my Philips TV with a slight desynchronization. TV get involves because it only provides for the use of an external box or headphones via this mode.

I have any way connected optical digital which is more logical. Most TVs offer an optical or RCA connector. At worst an analog connection is possible.

The result is the one I was hoping for after the conclusive tests in music. Even if it is only stereo, because the bar has no multichannel capabilities, the overall rendering is good with dialogs that stand out.

Good for the price

The XIAOMI TV SOUNDBAR just launch and offers at less than 95 € in a good plan . This price corresponds to that of a smartphone speaker of good quality, the first successful goal of the bar Xiaomi.

In conclusion, Xiaomi Mi TV Speaker is a recommended soundbar if you return to that band of users (nice big, I think) that can take advantage of a device like that. It is not the 30 euro coin and not even the brand range base cut short by commercial strategies. The limit, I repeated it several times, is in remote control: it does not have a remote control, and it is not possible to raise or lower its volume at a distance; you have to invent something to change the sound at the source.

For use with a TV or in conjunction with an Android BOX or multimedia projector, it is also a consistent investment with a quality ultimately far superior to any TV audio system. In this use, I would have appreciated the provision of a small remote control. However, for the rest, it has a swollen sound at the right point, a wireless reception of 10 meters real, and reconnects itself to the last associated device. Above all, she is comfortable in the living room because she knows how to hide in light or wooden furniture thanks to the refined and minimal design. Its WAF value is high. The usual Xiaomi product of above-average quality, especially advantageous if you can import it without customs duties
